Het alfabetisch systeem geeft een geheugensteun om nieuwe woorden op te slaan in het geheugen, met
de betekenis en uitspraak. Daarom hebben beginnende lezers een sterke alfabetische fase nodig voor
ze leren lezen, om makkelijk nieuwe woorden op te slaan.
Lezers gebruiken grafeem-foneem kennis om de spelling van woorden te onthouden tijdens de partial
en full phases. Beginnende lezers hebben vooral de aandacht voor de letters in woorden.
