assumed that alternative tourism is likely to
have more positive environmental, economic,
social and cultural impacts, judged against to
mass tourism.
It‟s in the early 1980‟s that alternative
options were developed. Before 1980‟s, the
problems associated with mass tourism had
already been identified but no alternative
options were developed.
, As mass tourism was generating a high
number of negative impacts, the idea of
alternative tourism seemed full of promises
to several destinations‟ stakeholders and
hence were more attractive.
However alternative tourism is not a type of
tourism but of several types of tourism that
are alternatives to mass tourism. They are
generalized under the generic or umbrella
term of “alternative tourism”.
