Title: Assessing whether attractions in Mauritius can be made
sustainable and so how, and with what tools?

Problem statement:

This study will involve the relationship between sustainability practice and attractions. It will
investigate sustainability practices in both natural and man-made attractions in Mauritius and to
what extent they are being applied. The comparative analyses of sustainable tourism applications
between natural and man-made attractions will be made. As no much research has been done in
this field, investigating the planning of those attractive parks to assess how sustainability has
been integrated so far will help us to know how sustainable our attractions in Mauritius are.

Aim: To what extent man-made and natural attractions are sustainable?

Objectives:

1/ To assess sustainable concept in attractions.
2/ To analyze the monitoring of impacts at attractions.
3/ To investigate the transportation and biodiversity management plan.
4/ To assess employees’ training on sustainable environmental practices.

1.0 Introduction
Mauritius do have considerable natural advantages as a holiday destination .The reputation of its
beautiful coral beaches, warm clear lagoons, colourful reefs, is almost legendary. In addition to
this big important asset, Mauritius also possess a wide range of natural and man-made park
attractions like the Lavanille Crocodile Park,Casela Bird park, SSR Botanical Gardens, Domaine
Du Chasseur,Les Sept Cascades,Chamarel et La terre au Septcouleurs and not to mention some
picturesque mountains. During the recent years there has been changes and development in such
attractions as they become more sustainable. Most of them adopted the eco tourism concept. For
example: the nature path in Frederica Nature Reserve where we can see the pink pigeon and echo
parakeets, La Vallee de Ferney with its black ebony trees, Domaine de L’Etoile where visitors
are assigned to different modes of transport for example:quad biking, horse-riding, or on foot.
The area is also home to many deer and wild boar and there is also game-hunting on the estate to
manage the numbers of these non-native species. We have also Ile aux Aigrettes which is the
home to giant tortoises. The tortoises play an important part in the ecology of the island: they
graze on certain plants and help the seeds to germinate by passing them thtrough their digestive
systems. Moreover, Casela nature and leisure park originally created as a bird park, which
included 90 aviaries compelling 1500 birds of 150 species currently entertains quite a lot of other
animals also namely Mauritian Macaques, lemurs, tigers, lions, zebras, ostriches, massive
tortoises, etc. Casela actually extends several possibilities to be in contact with wild animals and
enjoying the stupendous experience of wildlife . In Casela Nature and Leisure Park there are
attractions for store of all age groups particularly the children will be delighted with the
opportunity of caressing animals from the petty farm and they can also give food wallabies and
pigs. The most indispensable and agreeable instant can be spent by petting zoo where infant deer
can be enriched with milk; you can also come across chickens, ducks, ostrich, goats and many
other little animals that can be fed there. For older ones there are activities like bike safaris, zip
lines, the segway, where the visitors can find untamed boar, deer, and exotic birds. There have
also been some development all around the island in some recreation and leisure sights with
forested areas and these are three nature walks situated at Mont Vert, Bras D’Eau and Powder
Mills which have been created since 2006 where the amenities have been provided such as the
visitor’s center, picnic areas, kiosks, benches and network of nature trails and two other nature
walks, one at Plaine Sophie near Mare-aux-Vacoas and other at Ile D’Ambre which have been
