Technical Description of RTU
Based on the technical description of the RTU587, it has a wide range of applications, it
performs local tasks in a transformer station as part of a telecontrol or teleprocessing system, also
the RTU is created to allow great flexibility of configuration and can be used in stations of very
different sizes, the flexibility is based on independent hardware and software modules that allow
adding and removing capabilities easily.
Among the most important qualities of the hardware are the redundancy in communications
and power supply, because there must be a redundancy system so that the process does not stop
and there must be at least 2 levels of redundancy in the power supply. It also has a watchdog for
the supervision of the software and hardware modules, etc., a watchdog is a timer that monitors
the controller for failure and resets itself automatically, for example when an infinite loop occurs.
In software-related qualities, communication with multiple control centers with multiple
protocols at the same time stands out. RTU’s have always been used in situations where
communications are more difficult and their strength is their ability to handle them. In addition,
modularity protects the initial investment when new features are desired years after
commissioning. After commissioning the control station initiates the links with the link telegram
"request link status" on both links and the control station decides which line will be used as the
main line to carry out the commissioning procedure on this line.
Communications with the different SCADA’s can be by different protocols and channels at the
same time and the number reported by the RTU is limited by the number of available ports. The
data in the RTU database can be allocated to as many SCADA’s as necessary, but possible
command collisions must be taken into account and for this purpose the system that handles the
RTU587 is the RTUQM which is a software application system for Remote Telecontrol Units
(RTU). Among its basic features are that it is a real-time operating system for critical tasks, i.e.
with time adapted to different environments, modular and flexible structure, high reliability, wide
communications capacity, possibility of adding functions by the user and simple administration.
The RTUQM system of the RTU587 consists of different modules, which are presented below:
Console and Database Modules MCONRQ, MBDRQ: these are the central modules of the
RTUQM system that are responsible for coordinating and supervising the operation of the other
modules of the system.
MCONRQ Console Module: is the central module for supervision and administration of the
system, its main functions are: to execute the rest of the modules with the selected configuration
parameters; to supervise the operation of the rest of the modules and to generate actions to restore
the system in case any of them fails; to manage the hardware watchdog of the system; and in
general to supervise its own internal operation and to keep an error log.
Database Module, MBDRQ: manages the real time database with the status of the entry and
exit points of the system.
