key differences between mitosis and meiosis. a single cell undergoes a process known as mitosis to
divide into two genetically identical daughter cells. Because chromosomes are designed to carry genetic
information, mitosis also refers to their duplication and dispersion. During the meiotic process, one cell
divides twice, producing four cells with half the genetic material of the original cell. The sperm and eggs
that humans make, in both males and females, are known as cells in the past tense (webteam, 2021)
Three key distinctions between meiosis and mitosis
At the end of the division, meiosis produces four daughter cells, whereas mitosis produces two daughter
cells. As a result, during mitosis, there is just one division cycle (OpenStax, 2016). The division phase of
the cell is assumed to occur twice during meiosis and once during mitosis. Four daughter cells are
produced from the two daughter cells formed during part one of meiosis.
Meiosis results in haploid cells, while mitosis yields diploid cells. Due to the uniformly distributed
division of the duplicated chromosome and the similarity of the daughter cells, mitosis results in the
daughter cell having the same ploidy as the parent cell. Each cell obtains only one chromatid during
meiosis, which results in haploidy in the daughter cells. Chromosomes are divided twice and replicated
once during the process (OpenStax, 2016).
Gametes undergo meiosis in the gonads for fertilization and reproduction, whereas somatic cells
undergo mitosis for growth and repair. The daughter cells produced during the healing process must be
exact replicas in order for mitosis to occur. The existence of the gametes occurs during the meiotic
phase. Tetraploid offspring from diploid parents are produced when two diploid cells fuse together; this
is abnormal. To maintain the same ploidy level, the gametes undergo meiosis (OpenStax, 2016).
