1. Substance Use and Other Disorders and Dependencies - (1)
a. Substance Use Disorders: Expected Prescription for Smoking Cessation (Active

i. Bupropion should not be used with patients who have an increased risk
of seizures.
ii. Patients that use bupropion should avoid caffeine and other stimulants
to avoid insomnia.
iii. The intended effects of bupropion are to decrease cravings for nicotine
and lessen the effects of withdrawal.
2. Adverse Effects/Contraindications/Side Effects/Interactions - (8)
a. Airflow Disorders: Contraindications for a Client Who Is Taking Albuterol for
Asthma (Active Learning Template - Basic Concept, RM Pharm RN 8.0 Chp

i. Albuterol is contraindicated with patients with tachydysrhythmia.
ii. Beta blockers should not be used with tricyclic antidepressants because eit
increases the risk tachycardia and angina.
iii. Caution should be used with patients that have diabetes mellitus,
hyperthyroidism, heart disease, hypertension and angina.
b. Antibiotics Affecting Protein Synthesis: Priority Laboratory Values to Report
(Active Learning Template - Medication, RM Pharm RN 8.0 Chp 45)
i. Tetracyclines should be used cautiously with patients who have
liver disease. Pay attention to LFT’s
ii. Minocycline can increase the risk of Digoxin toxicity. Monitor
digoxin levels.
iii. Patients taking erythromycin and warfarin at the same time, should have
their PT/INR closely monitored
c. Antibiotics Affecting Protein Synthesis: Planning Care for a Client Prescribed
Erythromycin Lactobionate (Active Learning Template - Medication, RM
Pharm RN 8.0 Chp 45)
i. Erythromycin inhibits the metabolism of antihistamines, theophylline,
carbamazepine and warfarin.
ii. Verapamil, diltiazem, HIV protease inhibitors, and nefazodone inhibit
the metabolism of erythromycin, leading to toxicity and cardiac arrest.
iii. Administer on an empty stomach with 8 oz of water.
