Analyses: LAB SIX ASSIGNMENT (to be done independently) TA: Nick Grock NOTE: Hand drawn graphs are acceptable and, if they save you time, preferable. (Excel graphs with hand drawn parts are fine too.) Table 6-A. Corrected change in carbon dioxide or oxygen gas by a spinach leaf over time. Light Intensity (in µE/m2 /s) T=0 T=2 T=4 T=6 T=8 T=10 Change from T=0 to 10 (T10-T0) (enter this into group document) RATE Dark (CO2 in ppm) 0 5 9 16 19 27 27 2.7 Dark (O2 in %) 0 0 0 0 -0.01 -0.01 -0.01 -0.001 50 0 -0.01 -0.01 0 0.01 0.01 0.01 0.001 75 0 0.01 0.00 0.01 0.02 0.02 0.02 0.002 100 0 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.01 0.01 0.01 0.001 225 0 0.01 0.02 0.03 0.06 0.08 0.08 0.008 Rate Sample Calculation: 1. Record your data into Table 6-A (above). (1 mark for sample calculation of RATE) 2. a. Graph the change in carbon dioxide over time (grey columns in Table 6-A). Include a WRITTEN legend. (3 marks) Graph 2.a – Change in Carbon Dioxide Gas by Spinach Leaf Over Time This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :18:55 GMT -05:00 b. Graph the change in oxygen data over time (grey columns in Table 6-A). Include a WRITTEN legend (3 marks) Tmi Graph 2.b – Oxygen Percentage Detected in Varying Light Intensities c. Are your oxygen curves consistent with what you would expect? Why or why not? (1 mark) Yes, they are expectant, as more energy in the form of light is converted by photosynthesis there is a higher product of photosynthesis – oxygen. Additionally, the increase is very small which is proportional to the amount of photosynthesis of one single spinach leaf. d. Is the carbon dioxide curve consistent with what you expect? Why or why not? (1 mark) Carbon dioxide is present due to the cells in spinach being alive, as cellular respiration is a function of living cells. A byproduct of cellular respiration is carbon dioxide, and the greater the increase in carbon dioxide reflects the greater rate of respiration which is constant with our hypothesis that plants be using the energy they have stored rather than producing new energy from products of photosynthesis since there is no light, therefore they are unable to. e. Are the results from the two dark treatments consistent with each other and what you would expect? Why or why not? (1 mark) We predicted that a byproduct of photosynthesis would not occur in the dark and this is incorrect. Cells, in fact, are still producing byproducts of photosynthesis, O2 despite being in the dark. This light-independent reaction which is a result of plants gaining energy from an electron gained – which is another form of energy like sunlight which is used – from water stored in cells or its surroundin
