The Early Republic and the American Civil War
A.Politics and Partisanship
The rise of partisan politics resulted in the adoption of the Constitution where it created
the federal government for the United State and not everyone agreed with it. Because of the
many different opinions and views, there was a divide between the citizens; there were two
parties they split into, one being the Federalists and the other were Anti-Federalists. Those who
supported the Constitution were the Federalists; they called the people that feared the
Constitution, Anti-Federalists because they believed it focused more power for the government
and less protection for individuals without a bill of rights (Norton,2015). The Constitution
lacked protecting the people against tyranny of a powerful government, but the Anti-Federalists
wanted it to also include the protection of freedom of religion and press, trial by jury, and
unreasonable searches. When the Bill of Rights was eventually added, the arguments didn’t come
to an end. There were more parties added.
Two men named James Madison and Thomas Jefferson created the Democratic-
Rupublican party which went against the opposing side of Hamilton, who was on the side of the

System.
B1. Politics and Parties
The Second Party System had another set of political parties, the Democratic and the
Whig Party. Starting off with the Democratic party, important issues were movement westward
that would give independent land ownership (Norton, 2015). They encouraged limited
government, meaning they have fewer laws; they even saw their society as divided and the
wealthy were the ones that benefited the most. The Whig Party, “Were suspicious of rapid
westward expansion, and instead pushed for commercial development within the nation’s current
boundaries” (Norton). They were an activist government. The commercial developments
included charters, banks, and paper currency, which they supported, however the Democrats
didn't support all three of them. Whigs favored the wealthy and believed that people should be
ruled in a top down approach(Norton). The disagreements between the two parties were based on
the election’s main issue of the Second Bank. The Second Bank was where people deposited
their federal funds and gave business credit; it acted as a clearing house. The Democrats attacked
the Whigs headquarters because of this controversy. Eventually in 1837, they joined the Whigs
for using money for state-funded internal improvements.
