It is well established that the duration of catheterization is directly related to the risk of the developing a UTI. Each day that a patient has a catheter in place, the risk of developing a UTI increases from 3% to 7% (AL-Hazmi, 2015). Researchers have showed that catheters are doing more harm than good. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent a large amount of hospital acquired (HA) infections (Rabideaux, 2015). CAUTIs are not only a patient safety risk, it also increases patient’s length of stay in the hospital, treatment cost and overall result in inefficient management of human and financial resources.
