Hordeolum treatment: Warm compresses for 10 minutes-4 times per day (to draw drainage out) Teach patient not to squeeze but allow to drain on its own Daily lid scrubs Antibiotics only for recurrent or resistant or presence of conjunctivitis: Erythromycin, polymixin B 8. chalazion: -Hordeolum that does not resolve and forms a granulated tissue - slow developing, painless, hard mass -can be pea sized nodules. -not an infection, its just a blocked gland Refer to optimologist if they persist. 9. Bacterial conjunctivitis s/s: -redness -purulent discharge or thick and globular -unilateral at onset -eyes glued shut in the morning -eyelid edema Can wipe eye in office and if discharge immediately comes back it is a good indication it is bacterial 11. Allergic conjuctivitis s/s: -bilateral redness -watery discharge -intense itching -crusty in morning -history of allergic symptoms 12. Treatment of allergic conjuctivitis: -cold compresses -lubricating eye drops -antihystimines topical & systemic and decongestants, nsaids 13. viral conjunctivitis s/s: -gritty burning -morning crusting -watery discharge -unilateral onset then bilat 1-2 days 14. treatment for viral conjunctivitis: -antihistamine -lubricant drops -cool compresses 15. corneal abrasion s/s: -Eye pain -hesitant or unable to open eye -foreign body sensation 16. suspecting corneal abrasion exam: look for forign bodies with pen light and do fundoscopic exam, then if not seen proceed with fluorscein stain and colbalt blue filter. 17. Glaucoma: increased intraocular pressure results in damage to the retina and optic nerve with loss
