Civil Engineering Summary and Questions
Summary
The aftermath of the hurricane was evident throughout. Photos depicting the damages
that came with the hurricane were availed for all to see. While people were conversant with what
transpired in the course of the hurricane, very few appreciated the fact that the devastation would
have been more severe were it not for the change in the path of the eastward storm that
suppressed the storm surge. Scores of lives would have been lost and more properties destroyed.
Though people appreciated the fact that a category 4 or hurricane or above could have flooded
the entire city, not many heeded to the National Weather Service’s warnings. Complacent had
become the norm for the majority of people particular in respect to the Gulf Storms. No one
seemed to care about the many reports of a tropical depression formed over Central Bahamas.
In the wake of the disaster, more than 95 percent of homes across New Orleans were
flooded uP to a 15 feet depth. The flood destroyed over 100,000 houses. In Louisiana alone, the
people estimated to have died or missing to the extent of being declared lost hit 1464. The
destruction extended further to important installations and infrastructures such as hospitals, gas
stations, and public transportation systems. The New Orleans Sewage and Water Board in the
wake of the hurricane made a number of repair works to the breakages in its water supply
infrastructure. However, in spite of their effort, a lot of water still sips through the breakages up
to now. Moreover, the tree that succumbed to the force of the hurricane and fell destroyed the
supply of gas in the state necessitating the replacement of New Orleans gas supply system.
Hurricane Katrina led to a decrease in the populations. As such, efforts to rebuild after the
hurricane is marred with the reduced labor force. The decrease came as a result of people dying,
some getting sick, others becoming permanently disabled and other disappearing without a trace.
