PO200 Unit 8- Final Exam Short Answers docx complete test
1. Name two ways in which governing as an American president with a Congress is different than governing as a British prime minister with a parliament. Be specific. Governing as an American President is different from governing as a British prime minister in various ways. In the UK they vote differently for their Prime Minister versus how we vote for President. The UK people vote for a member to be elected into parliament and then the party with the most members of Parliament vote for the Prime Minister. Whereas with the U.S, the people vote for the President. The next difference is that the U.S. President is elected for 4 years and the British Prime Minister is elected for 5 years. Also, the Prime Minister is only the head of government and the Monarch is the state head but the U.S President is head of state and government. 2. Briefly describe the White House Office, executive office, and cabinet. What is the role of each, and who serves in each? White House Office is an entity inside the Executive Office. These members are appointed by the U.S President. Those who serve in this office does not need to be confirmed by the Senate. They help oversee policy and political interests of the President. It play a role to open dialogue between the President and the American people. Cabinet is made up of the department heads of the executive branch. The cabinet is made of the heads of the 15 executive departments and the Vice President. Members of the cabinet are selected for the positions by the President. The cabinet’s role is part of the constitution that acts as advisors to the President. Executive office is a group of agencies at the center of executive branch of U.S government. It supports the work of the President. They play a managerial role and also advisory role. Sometimes they also personally handle policy matters. They carry out day to day administrative work of the federal government. 4. Name the three branches of government. Name three checks on power that one branch can use on another branch (all checks do not have to come from the same branch or check power on the same branch; feel free to mix it up). The government is divided into three different branches by the constitution which are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Each branch is given certain powers to have the checks and balances on the other branches. Listed next are some checks on power that one branch can use on another. For example, the laws are created by the legislative branch but the veto power is with the President who is part of the executive branch. Also, the laws that are made by the legislative branch can be declared unconstitutional by the judicial branch. Lastly, a law can be vetoed by the President of the executive branch but in case of the majority of votes, the veto can be overruled by the legislative branch.
