The Boston Beer Company Executive Summary The Boston Beer Company (BBC) was founded by Jim Koch in 1984, and started with a beer brewed from his great-great-grandfather’s microbrew recipe. The company expanded and eventually went public in 1995. Koch received multiple offers to buy his company out, but he would always decline. Selling only 1% of the total beer market, he maintained his operations and never changed his great-great-grandfathers recipe. Synopsis of the Case Kochs’ BBC is integral to starting the microbrew explosion of the 1990s, discovering a family recipe, and turning into a multimillion dollar company. Brewing up the first batch up in his kitchen, handcrafting the recipe into a brew that was more flavorful and higher-quality than was available in the U.S. Brewing over a million barrels of 25 different styles of Boston Beer products and employing 520 people. The BBC success can be attributed to its mission to offer the highest quality products and to see long-term profitable growth. Koch has always wanted to remain independent, and has never altered the original recipe.
