Okeefe Grand Canyon University ELDER ABUSE ON THE RISE IN THE UNITED STATES 2 Abstract This paper explores reasons why elder abuse is on the rise in the U.S. and the results from various research studies conducted on elderly residents living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and homes with spouses, family members, or alone receiving home health care services. Moderately designed questions dealt with set of circumstances and explanatory analysis from descriptive case histories. Findings indicated that domestic mistreatment of the elderly was familiar to most professionals interviewed, to the extent that 60 per cent of the respondents dealt with such cases on a weekly basis. Most participants in the study, implied that there were no established procedures for dealing with, or follow-up on mistreatment cases, and more than half reported that not anything was done. Differences in view of the causes and origins of elder mistreatment were intimately related to the professional viewpoints of the groups. Mistreatment and neglect inside the family unit represents in theory a serious threat to the elderly citizens’ health. Different geographical areas were selected as interview sites professional and/or occupational categories were selected for participation in the study and questions were developed in a Likert-type format which was first developed in 1932 by the social psychologist Rensis Likert. Data collection was designed to focus on the respondents' personal and professional work experiences Moreover, the identification of mistreatment cases will continue to be difficult because of the legal and moral implications for caretakers and professionals, and the defenseless position of the victim.
