WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR A SUSTAINABLE
URBAN LIFE

ABSTRACT:
Proper waste management is one of the major problems for densely populated urban areas. It is
getting difficult day by day to lead a healthy, sustainable living in urban areas because of
environmental contamination. Due to the lack of proper waste management approach, problems like
an overflow of waste occurs that badly harm our environment. Polluted surroundings result in the
spread of various kinds of diseases in an epidemic form. For developed and developing countries,
waste management is a challenge to long-term development. Proper management of waste is getting
tougher because of increasing population, urbanization, and industrialization. The overflow of
garbage in public areas creates the unhygienic condition in the nearby surrounding. It may provoke
several serious diseases amongst the nearby people. In this modern era of technology, we need to
apply technology-based solutions to handle large amounts of waste for overpopulated urban areas.

INTRODUCTION:

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness” is said and believed from
centuries .Cleanliness is one of the important issues in the
modern society. Solid waste is the sole factor which has
negative impacts on the health and hygienic aspects of
people and environment. Even though many efforts have been
taken to handle the trash efficiently, it is a challenging dispute
for all countries. India being a huge and highly populated
nation, effective waste management is the major concern in
maintaining the health and hygiene of the people. Solid waste management is a major problem for
many urban local bodies in India, where urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have
resulted in increased municipal solid waste generation. Effective waste management is a major
challenge in cities with high population density. Achieving sustainable development within a country
experiencing rapid population growth and improvements in living standards is made more difficult in
India because it is a diverse country with many different religious groups, cultures and traditions.
Despite significant development in social, economic and environmental areas, waste management

, systems in India have remained relatively unchanged. The informal sector has a key role in extracting
value from waste, with approximately 90% of residual waste currently dumped rather than properly
disposed. The Waste Management and Handling Rules in India were introduced by the Ministry of
Environment and Forests (MoEF) ,although compliance is variable and limited.

IMPORTANCE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

 Improves Human Health : The improper management and disposal of different types of wastes
can cause a variety of health issues to humans. These can include skin irritation, respiratory
problems, and other illnesses. For example, wastes that release dioxins and other toxins are
dangerous, especially when they’re diffused into the air people breathe. Moreover, toxic
chemicals from waste leaking into water bodies can also be harmful to people who consume that
water on a regular basis. Due to these circumstances, proper management and disposal of waste,
whether in our home or business establishment, is very important to avoid putting human health
at risk for serious medical conditions.

 Preserves The Environment: Improper disposal of waste, including burning and dumping is
not good for Mother Nature. This is because doing so pollutes the air and releases toxins that can
lead to the destruction of the planet through the extreme climate changes the world is
experiencing now. Also it can result in the contamination of air, water, and soil, which in turn can
cause harm to the environment as well as communities.

 Saves the Earth and Conserves Energy: This characteristic of waste management includes
specifically the recycling aspect. As recycling of waste helps in reducing the cutting down of
trees. This cutting of trees is mainly done to produce paper. Though the paperless office is the
new trend that is practiced widely but with the help of recycling we can conserve energy and
lower the consumption of earthly resources.

 Increases Safety in the Workplace and Community: Waste materials can be harmful to your
workers, as well as the surrounding environment. It can save your employees and visitors from
illness and accidents at work. This could include anything from putting your rubbish in the bin to
sorting out waste into the correct recycling containers.
