The concept of slavery in Texas history has been explored by various parties
including scholars, researchers, governments and activists. They have sought to understand the
motives, the life and the factors that led to the abolishment and end of slavery. This paper seeks
to discuss “A Southern Slave Empire” by Randolph B. Campbell and “The Roots of Texas
Secession” Walter L. Buenger.
Campbell argues that Negro slavery was an economic necessity which led
growth and shaped the future of Texas with the arrival of the Anglo-American settlers from the
Old South in the 1820s while Buenger argues that the political, economic and demographic
issues of Texas contributed towards secession. Both authors discuss slavery and the role it
played in shaping the political, economic and social dimensions of Texas. Campbell analyzes
slavery in Texas after the arrival of the Anglo-American colonists in the 1820s (Sean, 714). He
focuses on the role it played, the laws and regulations governing slavery and the relationship
between bondsmen, their masters and the government. Buenger on the other hand explores the
political climate and affiliations of the Texans during the decade that preceded secession in
Texas. He emphasizes on the commitment that the Texans had towards the Union. The author
does not clearly state the Union’s role in secession. However, the article suggests that the

Texans in the Union motivated secession in the state. It revealed the invasion of sectionalism
and radical abolitionism (Buenger, 172). In addition, the author discusses the political
environment between the Democrats and their opponents up to 1859. The author implies that
although the National and Social Democrats shared similar core values, they differed in the
political expression of these values.
The authors utilize varied evidence to support and draw convincing
arguments. Campbell quotes the words of the Anglo settlers’ leader Stephen F. Austin to support
his argument that slavery was a necessity in Texas. Austin was a known leader at the time, who
advocated for slavery. Various researchers have discussed his role and impact on slavery in
Texas. He also quotes the words of the Texas Supreme Court judge James H. Bell when
investigating legal provisions that were made for the slaves (Campbell, 132). The words of the
judge implied that issues regarding slaves at the time were left in the hands of the master. This
implies that the treatment of slaves depended on the master’s regard for humanity.Further, the
author relies on factual data to support his arguments. Making reference to the wars that took
place such as the Texas revolution grants his work credibility. The effects of the Texas
revolution of 1835-1836 have been widely written about by researchers and scholars. The
revolution ensured the continuity of slavery in Texas. Making reference to primary sources of
data to create evidence and support arguments makes the article credible and reliable.
Similarly, Buenger applies primary sources to discuss facts and present
evidence on secession in Texas. He quotes John Reagan as he explains the difficult choice the
Texan faced on whether or not to abolish slavery. The use of speech made then, support
arguments and gives the readers first-hand information through which they can derive meaning.
