, Social History of the Telephone
Today the telephone is the absolute tool or instrument through which people can communicate
and exchange information. Since its appearance in the nineteenth century, telephone tools
brought up an efficient way through which individuals were able to talk with each other both
directly and indirectly. The postal and the telegraph systems which had come up even before the
telephone system couldn't match the efficiency provided by the telephone. This is because it
ensured broad coverage throughout the country. Also, it was capable of collecting information as
soon as it was created and delivering it to other people immediately. Therefore, its immediate
spread all over the country can be justified as a result of the power it possesses in conveying
information among different people and places. Due to its rapid widespread all over the country,
it has influenced American's social life both economically and politically.
The discovery of the telephone system can be traced back in the 1870s when the investors and
inventors noted that there could exist a tool such as a telephone, but at the moment, it looked like
far off from being a practical thing. Telegraph technology by then was what mattered most, and
therefore many of the inventors concentrated particularly on improving the same. In the year
1876, the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, whereby he submitted his patent
applications on telephones in Washington. The first call was made in March to A. Watson, where
he told him to "Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.". At the time, only a few people took Bell's
invention seriously as many considered it as a toy, but after a while, many people started
adopting it and even proceeded to install at their homes and places of work. Its ability to transmit
information easily between people in the country made it spread out quickly as the rumors of
how fantastic it was moved from places to places.
