Human rights in Europe have witnessed a shift in their development since the 16th,
17th, and early 18th centuries up to the 20th century. Across Europe one of the major concerns
raised by historians was slavery. Therefore, Renaissance humanism was intentional to ensure
they observe the much-needed civil lifestyle which resulted in the advocacy to ensure slavery
was aborted in the whole region. For instance, in the 19th century, both the Slave Trade Act of
1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 were instituted with the intent to solidify the
Different nations that abolished slavery at different times1. The French Revolution played an
integral role with the citizens pushing the government to ensure it not only protected the elite
rights but promoted its ability to ensure it advocated for the rights of all persons in the
community. Furthermore, the aftermath of World War II was the primary motivator to
encourage nations to take into serious considerations concerning the issues of human rights.
This was evident with the extensive human rights movements such as those advocating for
equality with women in respective communities plus the need to ensure voting rights were
instilled for all communities inclusive of the African origin persons. Human rights across
Europe have reach history in exploring the great lengths to abolish slavery and advocate for
equality across the European region.
Human Rights in Europe
The history of human rights in Europe began during the era of renaissance humanism.
During the 16th, 17th, and early 18th centuries there were European wars of religion which
waged across Europe purposely fought after the protestant reformation which started in 1517.
Aside from religion being the primary cause of the wars at the time there were issues raised
such as revolt, territorial ambitions, and great power conflicts 1. At the time there was a rise in
