History of Tobacco in Virginia
Tobacco is a cash crop that was first explored by Christopher Columbus
where the residents of Cuba islands used to smoke it in cigars form. It was
introduced and mainly cultivated by the colony of Virginia in 1612 (Arnold, 10).
However, tobacco became the source of wealth and staple product to the people of
Virginia. It became the main commodity that could be exchanged with other
manufactured goods at a profit. Therefore, it drew people’s attention and interest
and enabled them to have a different perceptions about tobacco. As a result, the
buildings, streets and market places were destroyed to create a space for planting
tobacco (Burk, 248). The colonists stopped searching gold and other occupations
that seemed in vain and concentrated mainly on tobacco production. They cleared,
spread and subdued the wilderness thus it brought them hope and a promise of
future wealth. Furthermore, tobacco growing became more profitable and the only
crop in the country of Virginia. This enhanced new growth and development in
the country.
Tobacco became a source of revenue to the colony due to export tax that
was introduced by the colonists. This led to the expression of defiance to the
country of Virginia and therefore resistance of the Stamp Act by at least a century.
Consequently, the lowered price of tobacco brought Bacon’s Rebellion which
reinforced the civil war of 1776 (Gray 27). Moreover, the system of indirect
