History in film
The historical films have ways in which they reflect the past as related to the traditional
history. The documents of traditional history contain important aspects like political leaders and
events that most the society looks up to understand what took place in the fore generations. The
historical films also play the same role. A person looking at motion pictures tend to get an exact
reality and mental pictorials of the significant past events. The films provide strong evidence of
what it feels like to be involved in the World War I, how the Japanese tea ceremony went on and
to be onboard on the Titanic. The events can undergo distortion of being staged in different
ways, thereby transforming the whole film. The historical movies play a significant role in in the
preservation of the attitudes, rhythms, gestures and human interactions in most of the past
occurrences. It is vital to know that the historical films share many features and information with
other documentation forms, specifically photography (Cattrysse and Patrick, 21). The films make
the viewers to have a look and carry out a comparison between the actions in the movies and the
actions of the current generation of the 20th century. There is no point in denying that the films
present indelible images regarding some significant events of the current century. The knowledge
about the events may not be in the minds of people because of the lack of vivid images about
them, as compared to the historical events that contain vivid photos.
It is worth noting that the fictional movies contain crucial historical evidence in a similar
way to other representational forms. The genre of films achieves the stated function through
portraying the social attitudes, turning events to be vivid, and showing the uninformed
assumptions of historical events. An example of a historical film is ‘The Birth of a Nation’ that
lacks the view of the reconstruction era. Still, it painfully presents the aggressive fantasies

associated with racism in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century (McEwan and
Paul, 99). The subjects of attitudes in such films include ethnicity, class, heroism and gender.
Rosenstone engages to the discourse and adds different aspects in his book titled ‘History
on film’. Chapter 10 of the book contains a pictorial representation of Martin Luther, leading his
followers in prayer at the Edmund Pettus Bridge (Rosenstone, 234). The picture plays an
essential role in presenting a piece of evidence of the assault that the followers of the King
underwent from the government. The believers believed in God and this is the reason why they
went down on their knees to pray. The followers seem to fear an attack by the state troopers. The
information in the chapter is all about historical events, including the opposition of the Japanese
leaders on the Second World War. They then were abandoned on the Pacific Island before
changing into cannibalism. Another development is the matching of the Emperor’s Naked Army.
Rosenstone also presents the right-wings attacks on the French theatres because of the images
displayed in the Arabian countries about the invasion of the Arabian soldiers (Rosenstone, 235).
The writer presents many significant historical events relevant for the current generation. The
piece of literature serves the same purpose as the historical films as it gives insights on into the
past events.
The author also describes the films that touch on the traditional way of life by putting into
mind three significant considerations, namely the contest, vision and revision history. There is a
controversy that Selma faced in America because of getting a nomination of the Best Picture of
2014. It is an essential film because it presents the unsuccessful and difficult efforts to have the
African-American voters registered in Alabama. Martin Luther was the leader of the campaign,
which brought up violence and bloodshed as the Alabama officials exerted force on these people.
