1.1) For displaying the measurements or quantities that numbers can represent,
images of numbers are helpful. Our emphasis is on "structured" images, which
enable us to observe "numbers within numbers" and, consequently, the
compositional and decompositional possibilities of numbers. Number lines make
it easier for humans to compare and round off the relative sizes of numbers.
Images of skip counting are helpful for recognizing and illuminating multiplicative
relationships. Selecting images that are particularly helpful in illuminating
particular ideas and relationships is an essential component of effective teaching.
