MODULE 4 (L23-31)
L23 – Healthy planet = Healthy People
Nature - Provides us w/ water we drink & air we breathe, and intact ecosystems
- Absorb ab ½ of our global CO2 emissions
- Protecting & restoring 50% of the Earth’s lands & seas – essential to
preserve biodiversity & solve the climate crisis
Biodiversity - Clean air, clean water, & healthy soils
Where does my - Of the land used for agriculture, most (355 million ha or 46% of the
food come continent) is used for livestock grazing on native vegetation in arid & semi-
from? arid areas
Earth’s land
mammals by
weight
Most of the land mammals – humans & livestock
,Australia’s
Agricultural
industries 2017
- Grazing native vegetation = 45%
- Grazing that’s modified pastures & cropping = 13%
- Crops grown largely in AUS – wheat, barley, canola, cotton & sugar cane
- Livestock – cattle & calves, sheep & lambs, poultry (the largest number)
Ecosystems are - Ecological communities & ecosystems have species interactions, dynamics
interconnected and flows
- So loss of species has other consequences
,Australia State - This is how we keep track of our ecosystem
of the - Done every 5 years
Environment
(report)
How the State of Env defines Ecosystems:
- The living fabric of Australia’s diverse landscapes & seascapes
- A complex system of ecosystems of living organisms intertwined with the
physical env they inhabit
- The basis for life – they provide habitat, promote food chains and webs,
and control ecological cycles & processes
Key findings:
- Biodiversity is essential to human survival, wellbeing, & economic
prosperity
- In the past 10-15 years, since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment,
great progress has been made in our understanding of the importance of
biodiversity & ecosystems to the quality of life of every person
- Australians believe it is the responsibility of the current generation to
leave nature healthy for future generations
State of Australia’s Environment:
According to 2021 assessment,
, - Ecosystems are in poor condition and are getting worse
