Week 4 – Cultural Competence
Culture - Fuzzy/vague set of basic assumptions & values, orientations to life,
beliefs, policies, procedures, and behavioural conventions that are
shared by a group of ppl, and that influence (but do not determine)
each member’s behaviour & his/her interpretations of ‘meaning’ of
other ppl’s behaviour
- Language, diet (vegan, being able to eat meat), sexual orientation,
ethnicity, political ideology, physical ability (athlete; ppl with
disabilities), education/training, religion, ethical beliefs (abortion,
euthanasia)

- Visible/tangible part of culture: traditions, customs, symbols, dress,
artefacts, behaviours, heroes
- Invisible part of culture (hidden under the surface): ppl’s world
views, assumptions, beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, values

Act 2014 In essence, these principles commit us & the people of NSW to:
- Share democratic values, governed by the rule of law and promote
a unified commitment to Australia
- Accept that we have diverse linguistic, religious and ancestral
backgrounds
- Create opportunities for all people to participate in all aspects of
public life
- Respect & provide for dif cultures, languages, & religions, with
English recognised as our common language
- Provide the greatest possible access to gov programs & services.
- Promote & maximise the value of our diverse cultural and linguistic
heritage to develop NSW
All Australians have the right to access health care that meets their needs.
In our culturally & linguistically diverse society, this right can only be
upheld if cultural issues are core business at every level of the health
system – systemic, organisational, professional, and individual (NHMRC
2006, pp.1).
