o Infection (sepsis)
o Bleeding (hemorrhage)
o WE ARE FREAKING OUT! Its unexpected!!
Two things you must encourage Post op
o Ambulate- the faster we get patient up and walking, the less likely they will
develop a DVT
o Incentive Spirometry- get patient to use their lungs to prevent Atelectasis and
further respiratory complications
When you see the following answers… CHOOSE THEM
o Eat Healthy
o Exercise- as tolerated
o Decrease or Stop ETOH
o Smoking cessation

if you have an inflammatory process of the GI tract select all of these..

o NPO- rest GI tract and also useful incase need to perform emergency surgery

o Pain control- help make patient comfortable (PRN)
o PPI- proton pump inhibitor (PRN)
If you see the words: DROOLING, ACCESSORY MUSCLES or STRIDOR used to describe
a patients status.. you are FREAKING OUT
