Barriers and barrier removal
What are barriers?
- AODA: “anything that keeps someone from fully participating in all aspects of society.
Can be visible or invisible.”
- ICF: when capacity>performance – what they can do in their environment
- Obstacles, real or perceived, that can prevent or interfere with access to goods, services
and facilities or to participation in the events, programs and opportunities available
within society

Types of (extrinsic) barriers
Barrier removal
- Provides opportunities for all to participate and feel welcome in community/society
- “readily achievable” barrier removal = easily accomplishable and able to be carried out
without much difficulty or expense

o based on size and resources of organization
o ongoing obligation (if resources become available in the future
