PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PPD)
Chapter 3.A. Activity
1. Discuss the qualities of being a "professional" based on the topics presented in
your IM.
A professional is described as someone who makes a living by doing something
that requires a certain level of education, skill, or training. A required standard of
competency, knowledge, or education must typically demonstrate (often in the
form of an exam or credential), as well as adherence to codes of conduct and
ethical standards.
The following are the qualities needed as a Professional:
Specialized Knowledge – Professionals have specialized knowledge that
includes factual, theoretical, and practical knowledge, competencies, and skills in
a specific discipline or profession. This knowledge can only see in their chosen
profession. All the skills necessary for their profession where appropriate as time
goes by, and they can also improve them through various pieces of training.
They have degrees and certifications that serve as the foundation for this
knowledge and as proof that they are competent in their field.
Competency – When performing their duties, professionals must be competent.
Competency is the ability to apply or use a set of related knowledge, skills, and
abilities required to perform "critical work functions" or tasks successfully in a
defined work setting. They are dependable and keep their promises by
completing the task assigned. If they fail to do so and a problem arises, they
must be able to make it right. Excuses will not be accepted instead of making
excuses, a professional must be capable of finding solutions.
Honesty and Integrity are regarded as one of the most important characteristics
of a professional. They must be trustworthy and will never compromise their
values, doing the right thing even if it means taking the more difficult path. Aside
from that, by showing that you are an honest and dependable person, you'll gain
respect and trust from your peers and managers, which can also play a big part
in your career growth, progression, and overall success. Furthermore,
professionals must maintain a positive attitude and remain humble, even
admitting mistakes at work. They don't just work by themselves.
