WHAT MAKES A GOOD BABYSITTER?

You hire a babysitter so your children will be safe when
you are away from home. You want someone with maturity and
judgment, someone who likes children and will do fun things
with them. The babysitter should know something about child
behavior, be able to handle basic needs such as meals and
putting the child to bed, and have the training to deal with any
problems or emergencies that may arise.

Babysitting

Babysitting is a popular part-time job. While looking
after small children can be a fun way to earn extra money, the
job entails a great deal of responsibility, particularly if the child
has an illness such as diabetes, which may require some extra
knowledge and understanding.

Life Scan suggests the following tips for all babysitters:

❖ Know where the parents are. Always make sure that
parents leave a telephone number and address where
they can be reached. If they cannot be reach by phone,
they should leave the name and number of a neighbor or
close relative that can be contacted in the event of an
emergency.

❖ Have emergency numbers on hand. Make sure to have the
telephone numbers for the fire department or poison
control center handy, so that they can be dialed
immediately if necessary.

❖ Inquire about any existing medical conditions. Find out if

the child has any medical conditions that require special
care. Be sure to take detailed notes regarding instructions
for dietary restrictions, medication, or physic cal
limitations.

❖ For example, if the child has diabetes, find out if you need
to assist him/ her in self- monitoring his/her blood sugar
level. Become acquainted with the procedure before you
actually try helping the child.

❖ Find out where first aid supplies are kept. No matter how
closely they are watched, children will still manage to get
minor cuts and bruises. Basic items such as Band- Aids and
first aid cream should be easily accessible.

❖ Be wary of strangers. Doors should be kept locked at all
times and should not b e opened for anyone unfamiliar. In
addition, no information should be given to a stranger over
the phone.

❖ Try to remain alert. If a child becomes ill or injured, or if
something else should go wrong, act quickly, but try to
retain composure as to not upset the child/ children
further. It will be easier to think logic ally if you are not in a
state of panic. Focus on w hat happened, what has to be
done, and who has to be notified.
