History of Law Enforcement

Like several aspects of the criminal justice system of the United States of America, law

enforcement can be dated back to the English origins. Unsurprisingly, then, it occurs that the

colonial United States of America was attributed by several roles of law enforcement that were

found in Britain at the period. Little transformed in law enforcement when the colonies insolvent

from the governing of English as the common law of England continually ruled and every

territory or state determined unlawful or lawful conduct. Since every territory, colony, and later

state-observed compete independence, every one of them had to depend on its resources in the

form of people and finances for its law enforcement activities.

It would be simple to imagine that the law enforcement officer is a character who has

been in existence since the commencing of civilization. Indeed, the law enforcement force of the

United States of America is a relatively contemporary invention. It was sparked by transforming

concepts of public order and facilitated in turn by politics and economics. Enforcement of law in

colonial America occurred to be very unofficial, founded on a privately financed and for-profit

system that gave people jobs part-time. Metropolitans also popularly depended on a night watch

where volunteers applied for a particular time and day, often to offer security to fellow colonists

involved in gambling and prostitution.

The advancement of colonial America’s law enforcement was the same as that of England

in the course of the same duration. Enforcement of law in colonial America was deliberated local

accountability. In the case of England, the colonies developed a night watch system to protect

urban centers against disorder, crime, and fire. Adding on the orders of the night watch, some

constables happened to be chosen by the public and sheriffs who got their appointments from the

governor. The responsibility of these people was observing law and order and offering other
