Review of 4 types of games
Students list
1. Target Games- Opposed or Unopposed: Golf, Ten Pin Bowling, Archery, Basketball and Lawn Bowls
(opposed – block opponent affect opponent’s response or delivery) Basic principle– Projectile-
Target-Score
2. Net/Wall – tennis, squash, badminton
3. Striking- T-Ball, baseball, softball, cricket
4. Invasive – Attack/Defence – Rugby, soccer etc
RB- Ranking of games is not in order of difficulty but ranked on how complex it is to solve the problem (to
achieve the best score)
Archery – Hit Target – No Return, target is not moving- least complex
Net/Wall ball games – wall (squash) or net – more complex
Objective is to place the ball where the opponent isn’t (tennis). The target changes because of mobile
opponent.
Game can be manipulated to make them harder or easier (DIFFERENTIATION) – adjust height of net, size of
court, size of wall, size of ball, distance from target or manipulate rules – you can only have two turns as
king in handball- over the fence is six and out, only underarm pitching
Activity 1 – Handball (playground game familiar to most students)
Resources – Pink Ball (like volleyball but lighter), cones for line demarcation
RB – What is the most common net ball game played at school?
Handball! All you need is a ball. No net needed – line all is needed.
Good choice for PE Teachers – excellent introduction for Kindy students to ball games.
Rules vary according to house rules (agreed upon conventions/rules according to where it is played) – can
vary greatly. Objective to get your opponent out or not get out yourself (to remain king). Differentiation –
some groups may hit the ball to each other while less able groups throw the ball to each other.
MQ students break into SUSD groups (4). Play an agreed type of handball (some catch and throw (bouncing
the ball at an opponent) while others hit to each other) One versus one – with two watching and waiting
their turn. (2-3 minutes)
