Abortion Laws in the United States
Introduction
World Health Organization approximates that 56 million abortions are conducted on a
yearly basis all over the world. 45% of the total abortions that are conducted are done in unsafe
manner risking the life of the mother and the child. Abortion is the act of ending a pregnancy by
either removal or expulsion of the fetus or an embryo. Spontaneous abortions that are caused
without any intervention occur in approximately 30-40 pregnancies. However, when deliberate
methods are involved to terminate a pregnancy it is termed to be an induced pregnancy. On the
contrary the techniques that are used to control birth in human beings are called contraception
techniques. When abortion is done using the appropriate techniques then it is the safest
procedure that can be taken in medicine. But when it is done using unsafe technique then the life
of the mother and the fetus becomes at risk. Making safe abortion legal will enhance the
maternal health. Depending on the period of pregnancy there are various techniques that can be
employed to undertake safe pregnancy. Several reasons stimulate safe pregnancy to be
undertaken on mothers (Medoff, 2020). Several laws have been imposed in the United States to
guide the abortion process. Therefore, this paper will discuss, criticize, and offer solutions to the
abortion laws in the United States.
Status Quo on the Abortion Laws in the United States
The landmark ruling that was made in Roe v. Wade case made abortion to be legal in the
United States. Roe v. Wade was the first abortion case that was brought to the Supreme Court of
the United States. Though abortion is legal in the country it is regulated basing on three
trimesters of pregnancy. Moreover, the various states have their mandate on how to implement
the abortion laws in their countries. Eight states allowed abortion to take place in their
