Competencies in Criminal Law
The inspiration to study criminal law arises partly from the passion for public service and
the desire for justice and equity for all. Nonetheless, one needs to acquire several competencies
in criminal law and justice to become a formidable ambassador of the law. The following
document explains the four competencies relevant to this course, key learning areas in each, and
their applicability in career contexts.
Competency 1: Examine Criminal Law and Procedure
To effectively understand the concept of criminal law and provide associated services to
the public, learners need to acquaint themselves with the foundational information about criminal
law. Gaining this competency would give insight into the reasons for the existence of laws, their
sources, implementation procedures, and their constitutional mandates. Criminal lawyers must
understand their role in interpreting the law to align the profession better and interact effectively
with society. Similarly, students undertaking this course need to understand the processes of law
formulation, its essentiality to the community, applicability in societal contexts to enable them
better to administer legal services to the less knowledgeable public. Ideally, this competency
helps students to capture the basics of criminal justice.
The two critical areas for learning under this competency are the foundations of criminal
law and the ethical concerns arising from the practice of criminal law. To understand the role of
law in society, students need to understand the principles of law, and its use affects their day-to-
day interactions. Further, students need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of
various laws and their use in social contexts. Apart from gaining the concept of legal practice,
students also need to understand the ethical challenges surrounding the dissemination of services
in this profession. In practice, criminal law professionals encounter numerous dilemmas that call
