COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TRENDS FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL

A. History of Media Development
McLuhan (1962-1964) and Quentin Fiore (McLuhan and Fiore (1967-996)
suggest that basically the development of media at some time affected society. In
general, there are four eras in the development of media and relate to the way
people communicate based on that era: 1) Tribal Era 2) Literacy Era 3) Print Era 4)
Electronic Era.
B. Technology and Media Relations
1. Technology creates media. Without technology there is no medium of
communication; Technology Changes -> media changes
2. New technology shifts old technology
3. Recent developments: New (digital) media replaces traditional (analog) media

- Era of Writing communication : 4000 years BC to present
- Printed communication era : 1456 to present
- Telecommunications era : 1844 to present

D. Traditional Media : Analog Media
• Print: letter technology, clichés, printing presses -> press
• Letters: Movable type (Gutenberg) -> quick drafting for bulk books, uniform newspapers
• Pen, ink, typewriter ->mail medium, pamphlet
• Camera photo, wash, print, paper -> photo media
• Film cameras, celluloids, projectors -> cinema media
• Music player media recorder, cassette, microphone >
• Voice broadcast technology, transmitting stations, aircraft receivers -> radio media
• TV broadcasts: video cameras, voice recorders, transmitters, receiving aircraft -> television
media
