UNIT 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Assignment 2A: Keeping up the standard

I am a newly appointed technical assistant at a large chemical plant, Chemcalequip. As part
of my induction period and to progress in my role, I have to demonstrate my skills in a range
of practical procedures and techniques. Part of my role is to ensure equipment is calibrated
and equipment and chemicals are safety checked.
A key part of my job will be making and testing standard solutions using titration and
colorimetry procedures. I must demonstrate my ability to carry out these techniques.

Before we did all the experiments we practised how to calibrate the following
equipment first.

Calibration of Burette

Introduction:

Your titrator's measurement accuracy is determined by calibration. With routine calibration
and correction, you may titrate safely, guarantee perfect compliance, and keep away from
inaccurate measurements.

Health and safety:

● No eating/drinking
● Wash your hands
● Learn where the safety and first-aid is located
● Follow the instructions and don’t do unauthorised experiments
● Never taste anything
● Tie your hair if it’s long

Risk assessment:

Chemical Apparatus Hazards What to do in case of
emergency

50 mL burette Might break Use appropriate
cut-resistant gloves to
handle broken glass. / Use
tongs or other equipment to
pick up or remove the glass

, debris.

Beaker Might break Use appropriate
cut-resistant gloves to
handle broken glass. / Use
tongs or other equipment to
pick up or remove the glass
debris.

For the procedure;

The 100 mL beaker was cleaned, dried, and weighed after each of these steps. In order to
clean the burette, distilled water was used. To avoid spills, the distilled water was then
poured into the burette up to the point mark for 0.00 volume using the funnel. 50 mL of water
was then transferred from the burette into the fresh beaker. The process was then repeated
until the beaker's volume reached 100 mL. After that, the weight was computed together with
the water's density.

, Results;

Weight of the beaker - 46.1 g
Weight of the beaker with 100 mL water - 146.6 g

𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 146.6 − 46.1 100.5
Density = Density = = = 1.005 g/mL
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 100 𝑚𝐿 100 𝑚𝐿

Calibration of Pipette

Introduction:

The gravimetric approach is used to calibrate pipettes. The precision of observations while
calculating the volume of water is influenced by the surrounding temperature, atmospheric
pressure, and relative humidity. The Z factor, which is used to calculate the volume of water,
is often created by combining these components.

Health and safety:

● No eating/drinking
● Wash your hands
● Learn where the safety and first-aid is located
● Follow the instructions and don’t do unauthorised experiments
● Never taste anything
● Tie your hair if it’s long

Risk assessment:

debris.
