Aedes MOSQUITO AND THE ZIKA VIRUS
Abstract
As the study of infectious diseases takes the front seat in today's world, widespread research
on infectious disease agents also becomes predominant in medical research. This study is
inspired by a need to eradicate deadly diseases to enhance the value of human life. Aedes
disease vector is one such disease agent that has long troubled human life with its subtle yet
ubiquitous nature. This research aims to understand the lifecycle and existence of the Aedes
mosquito and hence comprehend and devise mechanisms to avert its threat to humanity, with
a particular interest in the Zika virus. It also aims to develop plans and capacity for arboviral
disease surveillance, prevention and outbreak responses (Weetman et al., 2018).
Introduction and Overview
Aedes is a genus of disease vectors that belongs to the mosquito species and the Diptera
order. The Aedes mosquitoes thrive in temperate and tropical habitats all over the world. This
genus of mosquitoes is common for spreading deadly and infectious diseases such as zika,
chikungunya, and dengue.
The Aedes mosquito is identified by its narrow and typically black body with unique patterns
of light and dark scales on its abdomen and thorax (Kara, 2019). It also has alternate white
