How might operant conditioning explain superstitious behaviour:
Giving the candy/ jumping example:
ratio: has to do with the number of behavior completed
Interval: amount of time passed before the next reinforcement.
fixed ratio reinforcement: every 2 questions, I give you a candy
Fixed-interval reinforcement: after 2 minutes have passed, i give candy whe a
question has been answered
Operant conditioning & extinction:
intermittent reinforcement effect
Behaviour is more resistant to extinction when reinforcement is discontinuous
Behavior that is rewarded is repeated, the closer the reward the better
Latent learning:
learning that takes place but is not observable until the organism is called upon to
demonstrate it.
Ex: mice rewarded and not rewarded after running cross the maze
Observational learning:
obersvational learning = imitation
ex: two babies “Dadaing” imitate their parents’ conevrsation, children mocking
adult’s action of hitting boba the doll
Bandura: Social learning theory (cognitive component to learning), children hitting
boba the doll
