DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAMMARY
GLAND
( mammogenesis)
Develops from the integument (skin) from the ventral surface of the embryo (milk
line = thickened line of ectoderm (= mammary ridge )
Milk line = mammary ridge: develops from base of upper limb (axilla) to lower
limb (groin) except at the level of nipple , rest of it gets atrophied
Ducts and acini from ectoderm
Supporting tissue from mesenchyme
at 6th week of intrauterine life :
Mammary ridge at nipple ectoderm grows inward forming 15‐20 solid rods
(rudimentary gland) with dilation at ends form alveoli
At 5th month : cords develop
