The Concept of Elimination
Includes all of the processes the body uses to get rid of waste products. This can be
accomplished through the urinary, gastrointestinal, respiratory and/or integumentary
system. In this module, we will focus on factors that may cause alteration to urinary
and/or gastrointestinal elimination.
There are three major categories associated with elimination.
A. Control
B. Retention
C. Discomfort
Can you think of conditions (exemplars) in the above categories? What if you lose the ability
to control urinary or bowel elimination?
Normal urinary and bowel elimination requires normal anatomical structures (see your
Medical Surgical book or the following videos for review Video 1 and Video 2)
Assessment/Clinical Finding
To evaluate problems with elimination an Assessment must be performed. This
assessment should include a thorough history, examination and review of diagnostic
data.
What are some questions that may be asked during the history taking?
• What are the patient regular bowel habits?
• Any changes in diet, medical condition?
• Any new medications?
• Any alterations in elimination?
What four examinations techniques will be used during the examination
• Inspection
• Auscultation
• Palpation
• Percussion
