MICROBIAL GROWTH ON SURFACES
Biofilms, which provide a number of protective functions, frequently exist when bacteria are attached to surfaces. In biofilms that are adhered to surfaces, cells release an extracellular polymeric material (EPS) that shields them from the shear and mechanical harm that comes from fluid movement.
