Executive summary
This case study is conducted majorly to find out the values and characteristics that form the
Netflix organization culture and the effect that these values have on the company's workforce.
It focuses on the company's organizational culture and how it was able to successfully
implement it as a change initiative. Being a leading American based media service provider
and production company-it makes it worthwhile to conduct this study.
The company was formed in 1997 when two great entrepreneurs met and came up with a
common idea of providing movie mailing services. Currently, the company is involved in
streaming services on a subscription basis that deals in the online streaming of numerous
films and television programs consisting of those that are in-house produced. 1 From a humble
commencement, the company has undergone tremendous changes and as of 2020, it has been
able to gain over 182 million paid subscriptions with the United States making 69 million
subscribers.2 The company has its availability globally except in Mainland China because of
the local limitations, and in Syria, North Korea, and Crimea as a result of sanctions placed by
the United States.
The issue in question is how Netflix was able to successfully implement the culture of its
organization and how cultural change transformed its workforce to make the company
successful. This case study finds that Netflix was able to successfully carry out its cultural
change and be among the few companies that have been able to manage a successful
company with such thorough organizational culture. Many of the companies that have
implemented a strict organization culture like that of Netflix have experienced a high rate of
attrition, which is however not the case in Netflix.
