Introduction
[1] What is a paragraph?
- It is the basic unit of composition.
- It deals with one main idea.
- The basic idea of a paragraph is usually stated in the topic sentence.
- Every sentence that follow must develop the basic idea.
- The paragraph finishes with a concluding sentence.
- Sentences composing the paragraph must be well formed and punctuated.

paragraph.

[1] What is a sentence?
On the face of it, sentences seem to be made of words. In fact, they are not; sentences are not just a
sequence of words.
How are words combined to make sentences?
- A sentence may consist of a single word. Example: Stop!
- A sentence may consist of two words, for example, Kim stopped.
• There is evidence that such sentences consist of two phrases, too.
• First, words combine to form phrases.
• Phrases combine to form clauses.
• Clauses combine to form sentences.
[2] Parts of Speech
All words may be classified into eight parts of speech: nouns, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective,
preposition, conjunction, and interjection.
The same word may be any one of several parts of speech, depending on its use in a sentence.
[3] Noun:
Nouns are words used to name people, places, things, ideas, or qualities. Let’s consider the
following examples:
Robert Frost wrote poems.
Work brings success
Jane lives in London
People like honesty.
[4] Pronoun
A pronoun is a word used to replace a noun. It serves to avoid repeating nouns.
Jane has lost her dog. (the pronoun ‘her’ replaces ‘Jane’)
I saw the students and spoke to them. (the pronoun ‘them’ stands for ‘students’)
[5] Verb:
Used to express action, being, or state of being.
