Body Planes
• The human body in anatomical position can be studied by dividing it with
(imaginary) planes
• A plane is an imaginary flat surface,
like a plate of glass
There are three body planes:
a) Sagittal plane
b) Coronal (frontal) plane
c) Horizontal (transverse) plane
• These body planes divide the body
into right and left, front and back, and
top and bottom sections respectively
• Body directions represent movement
away, from or toward these planes
Sagittal Plane
• Named for the sagittal suture in the
cranium
• Midsagittal/Median plane: It divides the body at the midline into equal right and
left sections
