SURFACE AREA OF SKIN--“Rule of
Nines”
• The surface area of skin is 1.5-2 square meters
• To assess the extent of the area of skin involved
in burns the body is divided into anatomical
regions that represent 9% of the total body
surface area
• Morbidity and mortality rises with increasing
burned surface area.
• It also rises with increasing age so that even
small burns may be fatal in elderly people

• Anterior and Posterior surface of the
Head and neck = 9%
• Anterior surface of the Trunk
(abdomen & Thorax) = 18%
• Posterior surface of the Trunk
(Abdomen & Thorax) = 18%
