Aesthetics and the history of visual communication 1
A. ART
Etymologically, art comes from the Latin word ars, meaning skill, skill, ability,
cleverness in making or doing something. The word Ars is what becomes art in English.
The Greek equivalents for ars are tekhne/téchni (ability) and kalon (beauty). In German
and Dutch, art means art and translates to the same meaning: expertise.
Before 1935, the word art did not exist in Indonesia. Even Raden Saleh, the
archipelago's first Romantic painter, was described by Sin Po magazine (1931) as an
'Indonesian draftsman' rather than an artist. The term New Art appeared in Pujanga Baru
magazine in 1935. In his essay Movement 80, RD states that art is born out of certain
emotions. That's what defines the term art devolved into controversy.
The term art means smooth, thin and soft in Malay, and art and art mean skill, so
it is considered an inappropriate equivalent of art and art. At the time, the term art was
commonly used to refer to people who urinate.
So what is art in its most basic definition? Plato called it mimetic. For him, a work
of art arises from the human ability to imitate something. Especially when I'm learning to
draw. You have to imitate what you think is right to draw, right? Regarding Plato's
question, art can be defined as the process of imitating, creating, and perceiving
something in an artistic form through one's expertise.
