Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is the idea that companies should commit to focusing as much
on social and environmental concerns as they do profits. The idea being that there should be
three bottom lines within the company, profit, people and the planet. The purpose of the triple
bottom line framework is to gauge a company’s financial, social and environmental performance
over a time. Some similarities that exist between incorporating the TBL framework into both the
service industry and the manufacturing industry might include the overall goal of incorporating
this framework and both industries may purchase more environmentally friendly supplies. They
may work with more environmentally friendly companies, and they likely focus more on their
consumers wants or needs than an average company who does not use the TBL framework.
Whether it be the service industry or manufacturing, they are going to be much more self-aware
financially, environmentally and socially. As for differences that exist between incorporating the
TBL framework into the service industry and the manufacturing industry, we are going to focus
more on the types of waste or pollution that comes from these two industries. For example, a
manufacturing industry uses a lot of machinery, involving substances such as heavy metals, oil,
grease, biological oxygen demand and suspended solid, which can affect call elements of river or
marine environments. Therefore, manufacturing companies are going to focus largely on the
affects their own personal equipment may be having on the environment, try to limit that as
much as possible and maybe donate to companies who help keep the oceans or rivers clean, or
help the sea life. As for the service industry, a lot of their supplies they purchase from
manufacturing companies, so they are going to look into the company, make sure they use the
