Developing a Shared Vision
The nursing shortage threatens the stability and quality of the health care system for
Californians as well as all health care facilities within the United States. There are many health
care organizations that are feeling the effects from the shortage and not just with hospital
employed nursing, but other divisions of nursing additionally. There many reasons that
contribute to the cause of the nursing shortage such as physical, willingness, educational,
financial, maturity and understanding. This paper will discuss a staff meeting given to discuss
the contributing factors to the nurse professional shortage, contributing factors, reasons for poor
nursing satisfaction rates that result in a high turnover rate and ways to assist the nurse
profession to bounce back.
As you all know, there has been a nursing shortage that continues to increase
across the country. It is affecting most hospitals and we are dealing with the same issues here at
this facility. After the survey that was provided to the staff, we had an outside company
compile the results. Some areas that were brought to the forefront with possible reasons for our
nursing dilemma were:
Physical- meaning there is not enough trained nurses or personnel.
Financial/Understanding- When the unit may need a certain number of staff, the facility
might only have the budget for a fraction of that necessary staff.
Willingness-many staff members are suffering from burnout, exhaustion from their
schedules, complaining of low pay scale and looking into different areas of work.
Maturity-the average age of nurses is about forty two and a half, placing them close to
their retirement of their careers.
