❖ DCMS ( Department of Culture Media and Sport) roles:
➔ They promote major sporting events throughout the UK to help increase participation and
attract visitors.
➔ Works with other departments to improve public health and educate on importance of
physical activity.
➔ Funds Sport England to promote lifelong participation
➔ Promote School Games programme
➔ To develop strategies
➔ To assist excellence
➔ To collaborate
➔ To help and advise
➔ Sets rules and regulations by providing programmes and facilities to manage drug misuse
amongst athletes.
➔ They organise tournaments and competitions in the UK such as FA Cup and The
Championship Wimbledon.
➔ They seek to develop and improve knowledge in sport and PE
➔ Promote research and studying of sport and PE
➔ Help with the implementation of proposals from research projects
➔ Support the promotion of ethical standards among UK participants.
➔ Provides grants and loans to help develop and support the provision of facilities and
manages contracts associated with the acquisition and disposal of facilities.
➔ In 2011, they initiated school games initiative to increase interest in sport among both
primary and secondary school.
❖ DoH (Department of Health) :
➔ Aims to live a better quality of life.
➔ Recognises the importance of sport and exercise as medicine in chronic disease
management-trains their staff.
➔ Support NHS
➔ They play role in the education of the population with regards to the effects of smoking,
obesity,mental health and drinking.
➔ The DoH link with government departments to promote physical activity within the
population by working with DoE and DCMS and provide funding to Sport England who
promote lifelong participation among 14-25 years olds. This expands the School Games
programme to provide more opportunities to play competitive sport.
❖ DoE (Department of Education ):
➔ Responsible for English education and children's services
➔ Works alongside with DCMS for school related sport initiatives.
➔ Each country has their own DoE.
➔ Gives large amounts of funding to improving PE in primary schools.
UK Sport Organisation: UK Sport, British Judo, British Canoeing, The FA, Basketball England
School Games: government led scheme launched in 2012
Rewards schools for good PE and higher levels of inclusion, improve school PE via competition.
Funded by Sport England and National Lottery and delivered by Youth Sport Trust
It consists of 4 unique types of competition:
1. Intra-school competition
2. Local inter-school competition
3. School games county provision /offer
4. School games national finals.
