includes public corruption, money laundering, health care fraud etc. There are different aspects
of white-collar crime, one of which is organised. For an organised crime the profit made comes
from illegal business often using physical intimidation, for instance drug traffickers and
kidnapping. The victims in this type of crime tend to be held hostage by a very powerful and
manipulative leader, in this example the victims are being held against their own will. This term
could also be referred to with groups of people involved in activities motivated by political rather
than monetary gain, for instance terroism. Although the public are well aware of these events
taking place some do get unnoticed, these types of crimes are difficult to prevent.
Another type of white-collar crime is corporate, sometimes known as an organizational crime.
These crimes are committed by either a corporation or a corporation’s employee. The goal of
this fraud is to financially benefit the business. This being said such individuals committing these
types of crimes do not generally think of themselves as criminals, nor they see their actions as a
crime. In fact many of these crimes are largely overlooked by officials because they don't fit with
government targets, so many of these criminals get away. An example of this type of crime is
the Bernie Madoff case, where one man himself held the biggest ponzi scheme in US history.
He convinced people to invest their money with him by promising a big profit back in no time at
all, where Madoff would then pay them profit dividends money. Madoff had over 35,000 victims,
all of which were innocent people. He cost them a total of $65 billion receiving only $695 back.
As for the public they might not even realise they are a victim of a crime, none of the victims
from the Madoff case knew what was happening, this doesn't mean they aren't aware that these
crimes exist they are just hard to detect. The victims in this crime can be off any age.
The last type of white collar crime is professional, crimes committed by those of high wealth,
professionally working in business that usually involves a form of financial theft or fraud. For
instance, Harold Shipman was an english medical doctor who killed over 200 of his patients,
and was found guilty of only 15. This type of crime is similar to corporate crimes in the sense
that the public are aware these crimes exist but aren't always able to identify when you yourself
are a victim.
Moral crimes is a category of crime that is considered victimless because there is no specific
victim. It usually involves one person providing goods and services (drugs and gambling) to
another with no immediate victims to bring charges. The offenders of moral crimes differ
depending on the crime committed. However it's important to acknowledge that some people
commit moral crimes because of a difficult situation, for instance the homeless have no choice
but to commit vagrancy (begging and sleeping outside). A Lot of moral crimes are known about
but the public may not report the crime to the police due to sympathy.
State crimes are crimes carried out by the state or state agencies for example genocide, war
and torture. The targets for these types of crimes are those from a different country to the
government committing the crime, or those with different religious or political views from the
government. Kleptocracy is a government whose corrupt leaders use their political power to
gain wealth for their nation. The public awareness towards these types of crimes is extremely
high due to the levels of media reports because of the severity of the crime.
Technological crimes are crimes committed through the use of technology including hacking
computers and distributing any unauthorised data, all internet enabled fraud. Anyone that uses
the internet can be a victim to these sorts of crimes, which can affect individuals or large
businesses. Typically a lot of vulnerable or gullible people often become a victim to phishing
