Boeing B787 Lithium Ion Battery Project
According to the Ruari (2016), the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a perfect example of a
project that ran past its deadline and increased costs dramatically. The failure was caused
by Boeing’s supply chain was complicated and hard to manage. Moreover, the Boeing
wanted to reduce the cost through outsourcing the design and manufacturing the Boeing
787 parts, which were traditionally done by Boeing in-house. This paper provided the
analysis and conclusion of what went wrong and how the problem may have originated in
the initiation phase of the project.
How does the project failure relate to the principles of the project management Iron
Triangle and the project initiation phase?
The Boeing had set up a time constraint and decided to reduce the cost through
outsourcing the design and manufacturing the parts. However, the Boeing overlook the
effect of project management iron triangle, that is when the Boeing set up a time
constraint, the scope and the cost will be affected. To be more specific, if one is required
to make a change in one of these areas, at least one of the other constraint points will also
need to change to balance the overall effect (Bob, n.d.). In Boeing’s case, all three
elements of the iron triangle were not achieved successfully. The cost increased
dramatically due to the complex supply chain and the decisions to outsource. Moreover,
