Dewas — House of Gods
Dewas is an Primordial Town sited in Northwestern Part of the Dewas Prefecture of Madhya Pradesh. The
word “Dewas” literally translates to “Devon ka Vas” which means House of Gods. The name given from Devi
Vaishali Hill, situated in the midpoint of the City. The town was explored in early 18th century by Tukaji Rao
& his Junior Brother, Jivaji Rao of the Puar Clan of Marathas. They arrived here in 1728 with Maratha Peshwa
Bajirao.

In Local Language, the Hill is noted as “Tekri” and is belived to be Holy Divine with Temples dedicated to
Maa Chamunda and Tulja Bhawani Maa, built here. At the Times of British, Dewas was the Metropolis of
Two Princely states; Senior Dewas & Junior Dewas.
