Topics covered: Population & Samples, data types, data cleaning
Assigned: 1/10/19
Due: 1/17/19
Data notes:
Problem 1: You may need to look up a value here: https://irp.gatech.edu/mini-fact-book
Problem 2 & 3: Please use the combined data from the first day of class
Submission: Please submit via Canvas
Problems
Problem 1:
The GT BME department is making an effort to improve the climate of the department. As part
of that effort, they carried out a climate study last year that involved interviewing and surveying
students, staff, and faculty from the department. As part of that effort, we sent a survey to all
undergraduate BME students (N=1202) and received 324 responses.
(0.5pt) What population is the survey data a sample of?
Undergraduate BME students at Georgia Tech (or equivalent, must have all three pieces)
(2pt) We are considering using the same survey for a study of both the students in our class and
the undergraduates Georgia Tech as a whole. Assuming that the response rate will be the same
for each population, fill out the data table below. Please round decimals to 1 percentage place.
Value Data type BME Our Class GT undergrads
Population (N) Integer/ 1202 82 15,571
Non-negative (Comes directly from
Integer the PDF provided)
Sample (n) Integer/ 324 22 Correct: 4,197
Non-negative Acceptable: 4,204
Integer If 4,204, please note
that you should do
calculations without
rounding)
Response Rate (%) Real Number 27.0 27.0 27.0
1
Please list anyone you worked with on the homework. This uses the honor system. Remember that I encourage you
to work together but that the work your turn in should be your own work.
